What is a Car Diagnostics Check?
1. Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) System: Modern vehicles are equipped with an OBD system that monitors various components and systems, including the engine, transmission, brakes, and more. This system uses sensors to detect any faults or malfunctions.
2. Diagnostic Scanner/Tool: To perform a diagnostics check, a technician connects a diagnostic scanner or tool to the OBD port, usually located under the dashboard. This tool reads data from the vehicle’s computer and retrieves any stored trouble codes.
3. Reading Trouble Codes: The scanner provides trouble codes, which are standardized codes that indicate specific issues or malfunctions. Each code corresponds to a particular problem area within the vehicle.
4. Data Analysis: The technician reviews the trouble codes and may also examine real-time data from the vehicle’s sensors. This helps in understanding the severity of the issue and determining the next steps for repair.
5. Clearing Codes: After diagnosing and addressing the issues, the technician can clear the trouble codes from the vehicle’s memory, which helps reset the system and check if the issues reoccur.
