Bad Thermostat?

A bad car thermostat can cause engine temperature problems that lead to poor performance or even severe engine damage. Here’s how to tell if your thermostat is failing:
Signs of a Bad Thermostat
Engine Overheating
-
Symptom: Temperature gauge quickly climbs into the red zone.
-
Cause: Thermostat stuck closed, blocking coolant from reaching the radiator.
Engine Running Too Cool
-
Symptom: Gauge stays unusually low, heater blows lukewarm air.
-
Cause: Thermostat stuck open, coolant flows constantly, preventing the engine from reaching optimal temperature.
Temperature Fluctuations
-
Symptom: Gauge moves up and down unexpectedly while driving.
-
Cause: Thermostat opening and closing at the wrong times due to internal failure.
Coolant Leaks Near the Thermostat Housing
-
Symptom: Wet spots, puddles, or dried coolant crust around the thermostat area.
-
Cause: Failing gasket or overheating from a stuck thermostat.
Poor Heater Performance
-
Symptom: Cabin heater takes a long time to warm up or stays cool.
-
Cause: Engine never reaches full temperature because of a stuck-open thermostat.
Quick Thermostat Test (Safe Method)
-
Start engine cold – Check the upper radiator hose; it should stay cool until the engine warms up.
-
When the thermostat opens – The hose will suddenly get hot as coolant flows to the radiator.
-
If it warms immediately – Thermostat may be stuck open.
-
If it stays cold and engine overheats – Thermostat may be stuck closed.
